PROFILE
BRIAN CLIFF – PROFILE This talented 31 Year-Old Pianist started his solo career in Nairobi, Kenya where he has performed in some of the country’s most exclusive venues that include The Nairobi Serena, The Fairmont Norfolk Hotel and the Tamarind Restaurant {A Member of the Carnivore Group of Restaurants}. From a very tender age, Brian Cliff had a passion for music in all its forms. He grew up listening to Michael Jackson, George Michael, Whitney Houston and the like. But it was a little known Kenyan Gospel Singer / Pianist Lawrence Odhiambo that introduced him to The Piano. From the informal mentorship he received from Lawrence, he went on to study music formally at Nairobi’s well-known Music-Land Institute under the tutorship of one of Kenya’s most decorated Solo Pianists, John Karuma. Brian Cliff went on to perform in over 15 exclusive venues across East Africa in numerous high-profile gigs that included a dinner at Nairobi’s Prestigious Lord Errol Restaurant attended by the UN Secretary General – Ban Ki Moon during his first ever official visit to Kenya back in 2007. He later toured with a popular Burundian Musician, Kidum where together they played various venues in Kenya. He has also performed at a much-decorated monthly event in Kampala hosted by one of Uganda’s leading R&B crooners, Maurice Kirya. In fact it was soon after this gig that he was offered a contract to play regularly at Kampala’s Speke Hotel where he is now a resident Guest Pianist at the hotel’s Opera Piano Bar. {Every Wednesdays and Fridays from 11pm to 1.00am} Brian Cliff’s music career is heavily impacted by his Christian relationship with God, which has helped him remain grounded through all the successes he’s achieved in the industry. He recently was quoted as saying “To me, everything begins and end with God, including Talent and even the strength to polish it, to become good at anything you focus on. I view my relationship with God not as belonging to a separate, dis-jointed compartment in my life, but as what permeates through every aspect including my career and social relationships.” His piano performances have been described with adjectives such as “Sensitive”, “Soulful”, and “Perfect” and to this he comments “A lot of people who hear me play say I’m a sensitive Pianist-technically speaking that is. I don’t know. I guess I just enjoy myself and very true, often I get emotionally involved in the song. Having grown up amongst sisters also chipped into my general personality quite abit, which always finds its way into whatever I play.” Brian Cliff also holds College Diplomas in Mass Communication and Graphic Design which he says have had a positive impact on his career as a solo Pianist. “A lot of the stuff I leant in Mass Communication opened me up to the world of media and taught me how to effectively relate with the public. I use this knowledge as I advertise some of my shows and as I deal with one-on-one interactions with my fans as well.”
